For many decades after the war, charcoal was produced in isolation above the Alpe. Skilled men, known as charcoal burners (carbonai), mastered this tough and dirty trade. A one-hour loop hike around the refuge allows visitors to explore the old work sites (carbunera), including an authentic “charcoal burners’ machine.”
